Reconfiguring Site Situation: Rooftop Residency // Sue Gallagher from IDEA
Third Year | Semester 2 | Auckland University of Technology

Leading artists, designers, curators and thinkers from around the world are invited to stay at The School of Art + Design at AUT University as part as our residency program and collaborate with members of our Art + Design community. Despite the fact that it’s a rooftop apartment with fantastic view of Auckland, the dull state of the apartment and the isolated atmosphere creates a sense of removal and disconnection from the school, and is not entirely welcoming. The interior apartment space is very confined. The exterior apartment space is not appealing and undeveloped. This small apartment space has a high potential for visitors to personalise their own environment and develop relationships and connections with the school and their surroundings.
My abstract moments of time limit, change, intimacy, connection and control are all themes related to hosting events that can be independent and powerful. They are very relevant to the brief for temporary residency and collaboration. However, they must be filtered so that the space is not overloaded with too many ideas. The final moments are connection, control and intimacy, which will be further refined to reinvigorate the space giving it a personality of its own.
The concept for modular design looks at the idea of form and formless, everythin is connected through your senses. The space should be a place of “connection”, a place that brings the heart of the city to the residents where they can feel it’s heartbeat. To connect to the city, we use our senses; we see, we hear, we smell, we taste, so we control how our senses connect form the space to the city through physical gateways, in particular the opening and closing of windows.
Windows can control the flow our senses. It can function on both micro and macro scale from the particles from that we smell, taste and feel to the macro to we can see and feel on a macro level. The more levels of connection, the more intimate the relationship; the closer the person gets to the city. The design of the modular space, will give creative control to the user and allowing them to personalize the connection to the city. This can be done through the movement of furniture and tessellating wall panels. I want them to be able to develop an intimate relationship with the city through the control space that connects.
